Good Fxcking Music: Producer Competition
Good Fxcking Music hosted its first producer competition on Friday October 16, 2020. GFM was founded by Tori Husain, an NYU student, in order to create a space for musicians to still share music and connect especially during COVID. GFM hosts mentorships, competitions and collabs. With over 100 participants in the zoom meeting, the word is certainly getting around and people are pulling up. Contestants aimed to have their beats would impress the judges, Othello, Jasper Harris and Cammy Tabb, in order to score the prizes of: 1 free year of pro plan of BeatStars, $100 merch gift card, and $200 advertising. To sweeten the pot even more, Jasper Harris and Othello would co-produce a song with the winner. Jasper has written and produced records with DaBaby (“Vibez,” “Blame it on Baby”), Roddy Ricch (“Start Wit Me”), Juice WRLD, and many more. Jasper also recently co-scored the first season of Lil Dicky’s TV series DAVE. Othello is a producer who has worked with artists like Pop Smoke and is looking to producers to his roster for his label. Cammy Tab works for BeatStars A&R and is the youngest person at the company. For the first round, 20 contestants took a sample and added their own spin. The range of sample remixes was from trap beats to something that could be used in an action movie. Philly certainly made its presence known and brought the heat. The beats were what you could possibly want, they went hard and everyone was moving their heads in sync. The energy that people exerted in the event made it seem like everyone was in the same room vibing off of eachother. For the second round, 10 contestants played a song that showcased where they were from. As a listener, you feel more connected to the music when you know more about the person that made it. For a wild card round, fans brought back a contestant that was eliminated in the first round for a total of 6 in the final round. The talent that was heard was off the hook, the future of producing certainly is bright. After fierce competition, Narayana was crowned the winner. When asked how he felt about his winnings and and where he sees his career going he responded,
“Coming out on top is unreal, especially because there was so much talent in this competition. It feels really good to get such a positive reaction to my music. As a producer I spent a lot of time making beats in my room with only myself to judge it. I’ve been playing music my whole life and producing long enough to be confident in what I do, but it’s really something else to see that judges and all the people have a good time listening to my beats. I think that winning this could really help my career because I get the opportunity to work with Jasper and Othello. If it goes well hopefully they will be down to keep collaborating in the future, which could be huge for me. I also think this win helped me get some new fans. I just dropped a short 5 song EP with my good friend .kofi called .wavelength, so if you liked what you heard you should check it out.”
